This old Scottish blessing seems enormously relevant as we move into the cooler months of the year. Wood stoves are blazing all across the nation, and chimneys are filling the sky with smoke. As the bricks and hearth warm, eyes and hearts may glow as well. People once believed that the spirit of a home lived in its hearth or chimney. And no wonder! Especially in the cold of winter, life itself depends on the shared blanket, the communal fire, and the tenderness of a hug. We all thrive when we embrace the beauty of togetherness.
“Long may your chimney smoke.”
It’s a prayer, or maybe a hope, that your home will be filled with smiling faces and souls kept warm by love and hospitality. It’s the hope of a holiday season filled with hot meals and prosperity. Both under-appreciated gifts in our modern day. During this season, so much is taken for granted by those who have, while those who have not long for even a little.
When chimneys smoke, people are brought together, people share, people welcome those in need, and even estranged family can find hope and grace. A fireplace may be the centerpiece of memories, shared stories, laughter and naps. How many pawpaws sit around the wood stove whittling and sharing memories? Even the sweet smell of burning pine or hickory may leave a lasting impression on a child’s mind.
So, long may your chimney smoke! And may your heart and hearth be crowded with those who love you.
Each generation of our family has enjoyed the warmth of a fireplace. We continue to bond over the shared work that it takes to heat and cook. Felling trees, rolling logs, chopping, carrying, and stacking. We make warm memories.
